RUSSIAN DRONES STRIKE UKRAINE–MOLDOVA BORDER CROSSING, KILLING TWO ODESA / KYIV, September 9, 2026 — Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova early Wednesday, killing two civilians and injuring three others, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attack hit the Starokozache crossing in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, triggering a major fire and damaging infrastructure near the international border. Passenger and vehicle traffic through the checkpoint was temporarily suspended while emergency crews worked at the scene. Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper confirmed the casualties and said rescue teams, firefighters and security personnel had been deployed. Authorities did not immediately disclose the identities of those killed or provide a complete assessment of the damage. The crossing connects southwestern Ukraine with Moldova and serves both civilian traffic and regional commerce. Strikes near an international border also carry an increased risk that debris, drones or missiles could enter the territory of a neighboring country. Moldova has repeatedly reported finding fragments of Russian drones near its border since the beginning of the war. Although the country is not a member of NATO, it has strengthened cooperation with the European Union and Western partners as concerns about regional security have increased. Russia also launched drones against Kyiv during the latest wave of attacks. One drone struck a 16-story residential building and caused fires, although no casualties were immediately reported from that incident. The renewed strikes followed a brief reduction in Russian air attacks during a visit by U.S. peace negotiators. Ukrainian officials said the pause ended quickly and that Moscow had returned to near-continuous drone operations. Five people were reportedly killed in Kyiv during earlier attacks after the diplomatic visit. Ukraine accused Russia of using temporary pauses to reorganize its forces rather than demonstrate a genuine willingness to end the fighting. Long-range drone attacks have become a central feature of the war. Russia regularly targets Ukrainian cities, energy infrastructure, transportation networks and logistics facilities, while Ukraine has expanded its own strikes against military and industrial targets inside Russia. Odesa and the surrounding region are especially important because they provide Ukraine with access to the Black Sea and overland connections to Moldova and Romania. The area has frequently been targeted in attempts to disrupt exports, transport routes and international support entering the country. The attack on Starokozache demonstrates how the war continues to threaten areas far beyond the front line. It also highlights the danger faced by civilians using roads, border crossings and other infrastructure that would ordinarily be considered removed from direct combat. Traffic through the crossing is expected to resume only after authorities complete security inspections and determine that the area is safe.
